Dear Students and Families,
WELCOME TO GRADE 5! My name is Mrs. Forcier, and I will be your homeroom teacher this year. I am planning a very exciting and challenging year, and am looking forward to getting to know all of you! My hope is that we can learn from each other, help each other grow, and have a happy and successful year.
This year, fifth grade will be the beginning of your child’s future experiences in Middle School, but not yet the end of their elementary school years. It will be a new and exciting time for all! Students will be changing classes and moving over to the Middle School for instruction in Math and Science, as it is being integrated into the Middle School schedule. I will continue to teach all other subjects in our fifth grade classroom, such as Religion, Reading, Social Studies, Spelling, and English. Superhero’s are my favorite, and I truly believe there is a hero in all of us just waiting to be discovered!
I have included a list of supplies that you will need the first day of school, and a suggested summer reading list that will help you choose some books to read for enjoyment during those lazy, hazy days of summer. Also included is your “Summer Reading Project”. Please read the book “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane” by Kate DiCamillo, and bring your project to school the first day. This is a graded project, so please be sure to follow the directions carefully and put your best effort in completing the assignment.
I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Have a great summer vacation!
God bless you,
Required Summer Reading Assignment of 2017-2018
Students are required to read “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane” by Kate DeCamillo. Students are required to complete the assignment below over the summer and bring it to school on the first day of school in September. This is the first graded assignment for 5th grade.
You will use a 5”x 8” index card to write your responses to the book you have read. (Index cards can be purchased at Job Lot or Walmart.)
On the blank side of the index card, you will draw a picture of a scene from the book that shows something important in the story.
The picture should be colored with colored pencils, should be neat, and should show effort. The entire card needs to be colored in. Remember, no words on this picture side.
The lined side of the index card will contain the following info:
- Line 1: Your name and the date
- Line 2: Book Title and the Author’s name
- Line 3: Main Characters
- Line 4: Begin the summary of the story in complete sentences.
- Include in the summary, the description of the setting you drew and why you chose this scene from the story.
- Please edit for errors: spelling, capitalization and punctuation
- It all must fit on one card-no extra paper.
